What Causes Tired, Ageing Eyes?

Several factors contribute to tired, ageing eyes:

  • Ageing: Natural loss of collagen and elastin in the skin leads to sagging and wrinkling. Weakening of the septum causes prolapse of the deep fat and eye bags.
  • Lack of Sleep: Insufficient sleep can cause fluid to build up under the eyes, leading to puffiness and dark circles.
  • Screen Time: Prolonged exposure to screens can strain the eyes, causing them to appear tired.
  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can lead to dry and dull skin around the eyes.
  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to pollution and UV radiation can accelerate the ageing process of the skin.

Characteristics of Tired Eyes:

  • Dark Circles: Discolouration under the eyes often due to thinning skin and loss of fat and collagen as we age. Occasionally can be due to pigmentation.
  • Puffiness: Swelling around the eyes, which can be exacerbated by fluid retention, allergies, and lack of sleep. Often due to prolapse of deep fat as eyelid structures weaken with age.
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles: The delicate skin around the eyes is prone to developing lines and wrinkles due to repeated facial expressions and the natural loss of skin elasticity with age.
  • Dryness: Ageing can reduce the skin’s ability to retain moisture, leading to dry and dull-looking eyes.

How Can You Treat Tired, Ageing Eyes?

There are various treatments available to rejuvenate and refresh tired, ageing eyes. Here is an overview of common treatments:

Non-Surgical Treatments:

  • Topical Treatments: Use of creams and serums containing ingredients such as retinol, hyaluronic acid, and peptides to improve skin texture and hydration.
  • Facials: HydraFacials and Intraceuticals Oxygen Facials work to plump and rejuvenate tired eyes. Lifting Facial Massages use manual pressure and manipulation to lift the areas around the eyes
  • Dermal Fillers: Injectable treatment to restore volume and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.
Polynucleotides: Injectable treatment to rejuvenate dark under eyes and crepiness around the eyes
  • Microneedling: SkinPen is used to reduce the appearance of crepiness of skin around the eyes via a boost to collagen production in the area
  • Radiofrequency Therapy: Thermage uses radiofrequency technology to stimulate collagen production when used around the eyes
  • Radiofrequency – Microneedling: Morpheus8 uses both microneedling and radiofrequency technology to rejuvenate the eye area.
  • Light Therapy: Sciton BBL works to diminish the appearance of pigmentation.
  • Laser Therapy: Sciton HALO improves skin texture and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation. Sciton ClearV can eliminate visible veins around the eyes which make the eyes otherwise look tired.

Surgical Treatments:

  • Upper Blepharoplasty: A surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the eyelids for a more youthful appearance.
  • Lower Blepharoplasty: A surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin, fat, and muscle from the lower eyelids to reduce puffiness and bags under the eyes, thereby creating a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
  • Surgical Browlift: A surgical procedure to raise the height of the eyebrows, with the consequent effect of lifting the eyes, and restoring a more youthful appearance.
